Microwave Repair in West Sacramento: Top Town Appliance Repair Service van with technician Masood

Microwave repair is different from other appliance work, because the part that hurts people sits inside a sealed box. We do microwave repair at your home in West Sacramento and Sacramento for countertop, over-the-range and built-in units, and the high-voltage work stays with the technician. Here is what usually fails and where microwave repair begins.

Microwave symptoms and their usual causes

Runs, light and turntable work, but no heat

This is the classic microwave repair call. The most likely cause is a failed high-voltage diode or capacitor, followed by the magnetron, the high-voltage transformer, and a thermal fuse that has blown. A door switch or interlock that does not engage fully can also stop the heating even though everything else works.

Completely dead

Check the outlet first. After that the usual causes are a blown fuse, a failed door switch, a faulty control board, or a thermal fuse that opened after overheating from blocked vents.

Sparks or arcing

Metal in the cavity is the cause most of the time, including gold-rimmed plates and foil. If there is nothing metal inside, look for a burned waveguide cover, which is the thin sheet on the right wall of the cavity, or damaged cavity paint. Do not keep running a microwave that arcs.

Turntable or fan problems

A motor that fails, a cracked roller ring, or a coupler that wore out. On over-the-range models, the exhaust fan and light are separate from the cooking parts, so the vent can fail while cooking still works.

Buttons, display and door

Dead keypad, flickering display, a door that will not latch, or a door that does not close firmly. A bent door latch or a worn hinge should not be ignored.

What you can safely check first

  1. Confirm the plug is fully in and the outlet works. Try a lamp in the same socket, or check the breaker.
  2. Reset the clock or unplug for a minute to clear a locked control.
  3. Make sure the door closes fully and that nothing is caught in the seal.
  4. Test heating with a microwave-safe cup of water for one minute. Never run it empty.
  5. Look for the turntable seated correctly on its coupler, and make sure the power level is not set low.
  6. Clear the vent slots and, on an over-the-range unit, clean the grease filter.

Stop and call us for a burning smell, sparks with nothing metal inside, a cracked or warped door or a seal that looks damaged. Never remove the outer cover yourself. A microwave capacitor can hold a dangerous charge even when unplugged, so any work inside is for a technician only.

Countertop, over-the-range, built-in and drawer models

For microwave repair, size matters. Countertop microwaves are the cheapest to buy and so are often the least worth repairing. Over-the-range units are bolted to the cabinet above and share a vent, a light and a mounting plate. Built-in and drawer microwaves fit into cabinetry and cost more to replace, which makes repair easier to justify. Convection and microwave combination models have an extra heating element and fan.

We repair all the major brands, so microwave repair is not tied to one make. Over-the-range models from LG and GE are common, and built-in units sit alongside the other kitchen appliances we handle for Miele owners. Have the model plate ready when you book: it is usually inside the door frame or on the back panel.

Microwave repair at your home: how the visit works

Our technician arrives in a clearly marked van, in uniform, and offers shoe covers. The technician brings a tool bag and schematics, checks the microwave, discharges it safely and tells you the cause and the repair price. The service call is $80. If the van carries the part, we can often complete the microwave repair the same day, and same-day service is available. We use genuine parts. See the service areas page for our towns.

Repair or replace the microwave

Over-the-range and built-in microwaves are generally worth repairing for a door switch, fuse, fan motor, diode or board. A basic countertop model is a different story. If microwave repair approaches half of a similar new unit, replacement is usually the better choice, particularly on a small countertop oven. The repair or replace calculator will help you decide, and the appliance diagnosis tool is useful when you only know the symptom.

I was in desperate need of refrigerator repair after my power source broke and fried my appliances. Both of my refrigerators were affected, but thankfully, one was able to be saved. After searching on Google, TopTown immediately stood out to me. It was the first company I called because of the five-star reviews and the outstanding customer feedback. Masood answered right away, listened to my concerns over the phone, and came out the very same day to assess my refrigerators. I cannot say enough about the kindness and compassion he showed, especially knowing how much stress I was under after losing all of my groceries. He worked with me, was extremely affordable, prompt, professional, and genuinely caring. I highly recommend TopTown for any of your appliance repair needs. If you’re looking for someone you can trust, Masood is definitely the person to call! Thank you again, Masood! Regards, Angela

My husband hired this company to fix our dryer. Within an hour it was done. They arrived on time were very professional and knowledgeable about the issue. Our dryer is now running like new!

Daysi MelgarJul 2026

The technician was able to get to our home earlier than anticipated which was appreciated. He explained what needed to be done and our options. Because of the age of our appliance we decided not to get it repaired. He also gave us valuable recommendations on a replacement. We definitely will call him for any future appliance repairs.

FAQ

Microwave Repair questions

Why does my microwave run but not heat?

The likely culprits are a failed high-voltage diode, capacitor, magnetron or transformer. Because these parts hold dangerous voltage, they should only be tested and replaced by a technician.

Is it dangerous to use a microwave that sparks?

Yes, stop using it. Sparks with no metal inside can mean a burned waveguide cover or damaged cavity wall, which can start a fire. Unplug it and have it looked at.

Can I open my microwave to check the fuse?

No. The capacitor can hold a charge even when the unit is unplugged, and the cover hides high voltage. Leave all internal work to a technician who knows how to discharge it.

Why is the turntable not turning?

Check that the glass tray is seated on the coupler and the roller ring is in place. If it still does not turn, the turntable motor or coupler may be worn and can be replaced.

How do I know the door seal is safe?

Look for a bent door, warped seal or a gap when closed. If the door does not latch firmly or the seal is damaged, stop using the microwave until a technician has checked it.

Is repairing a small countertop microwave worth it?

Often not, because a new one costs little. Over-the-range and built-in units are different, and repair usually makes sense. We tell you the repair price so you can decide.
