What goes wrong, by symptom
No ice at all
For no-ice ice maker repair calls, check, in this order of likelihood: the ice maker is switched off (the wire arm is up, or the setting is off); the freezer is not cold enough to freeze a batch; the water supply is shut or the line is frozen; the inlet valve has failed; the ice maker module or its thermostat has failed.
Small, hollow or shrunken cubes
In ice maker repair, this is mostly low water pressure or a partly blocked fill tube or filter. A refrigerator water filter that is overdue for replacement is a classic reason for weak flow. Then the inlet valve, which opens only part way.
Ice clumped together or frozen into a block
Ice that melts and refreezes is a sign of temperature swings or infrequent use. The bin may have a slow-turning auger. A fill tube frozen at the top is another cause, and then the freezer is too warm or the door is not sealing.
Water leaking
The water line, the inlet valve or a cracked fill tube. If water is on the floor, shut off the supply to the refrigerator.
Ice tastes or smells off
Old ice absorbing freezer odours, an old filter or dirty bin. Empty the bin, wash it, replace the filter and discard the first batch.
What you can safely check first
- Make sure the ice maker is on. The wire arm should be down, or the switch set to on.
- Check the freezer temperature. It should be around 0 degrees Fahrenheit for ice to form on time.
- Look at the water filter. If it is past its replacement date, swap it.
- Take the bin out and clear ice that has fused together. Let a frozen block thaw naturally.
- Check the water line at the back of the refrigerator and the supply valve under the sink or on the wall for kinks and closure.
- Give it a day to produce a new batch before deciding.
Stop and call us for a leak you cannot find, water near the plug, or a power fault. Never use a knife or pick to free ice from the mechanism, since it can damage the ice maker or the freezer lining. Do not disconnect water lines you cannot shut off safely.
Built-in, door-mounted and standalone ice makers
Ice maker repair depends on where the unit sits. Most ice makers are in the freezer compartment of a refrigerator. Some French-door models, including many from Samsung and LG, place the ice maker in the fresh-food door, with a duct that carries cold air; a frosted duct or a cold-air leak at the door can stop ice. Models with a dispenser add a switch, a chute and a door that can freeze shut.

Why is my ice maker making hollow or small cubes?+
Usually low water flow. An old filter, a partly closed supply valve or a kinked line reduces the fill. Replace the filter and check the line. If cubes stay small, the inlet valve may need replacement.
How long should an ice maker take to make a batch?+
Most refrigerator ice makers take a few hours per batch, and a fresh start after a repair or filter change may take a day to catch up. Throw away the first few batches.
Why does my ice taste bad?+
Ice absorbs odours from the freezer and from old filters. Wash the bin, replace the filter, wrap strong food, and discard old ice. Persisting taste can point to water supply or a dirty line.
Can a frozen ice maker be fixed at home?+
You can thaw it with the freezer off and the door open for a few hours, then clear the tray and bin. If it freezes again, a failed heater, valve or seal is usually behind it.
Do I need to shut off the water before repair?+
Yes. Locate the shutoff valve before we arrive, and turn it off if you see leaking. If you cannot find it, tell the technician. It is better to know where it is than to learn during a leak.
