Appliance error codes

What the code on your display means, what is safe to try, and when to book a technician.

Appliance error codes by brand

An error code is the appliance telling you which of its checks failed. A washer or dishwasher watches water level, door latch, drain speed, temperature and motor current. When one reading is wrong, the control stops the cycle and shows a short code. The code points to an area. It does not name a broken part, and it does not always mean a repair is needed. Plenty of codes mean a kinked hose, a full filter or too much detergent.

Codes also vary by brand and by model, and the same letters can mean different things on two machines. That is why each guide below is built from the manufacturer’s own US support page, with the source linked at the end. If your code is not on the official page, we leave it out rather than guess.

Find your model number first

Most of these pages ask which model you have. On a washer, look inside the door opening, on the frame behind the lid, or on a label on the back panel. On a dishwasher, check the edge or inside of the door, or the tub wall when the door is open. Take a photo of the label so you have it when you search a manual or book a visit.

Safe first steps for any code

  1. Write down the code exactly as shown, including letters, numbers and any space.
  2. Switch the appliance off, then unplug it or turn off its breaker before touching anything inside or behind it.
  3. Look for the simple causes: a kinked hose, a closed water valve, a door caught on laundry, an overloaded drum.
  4. Clean the filter if your manual shows how, with the power off and towels ready.
  5. Restore power and run one cycle. If the same code comes back, stop and note what you tried.

Never open a control board or panel, and do not work on gas lines or gas valves. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.

Pick your appliance

If a code will not clear, you can book a visit or call us. Top Town is an independent repair company and is not affiliated with any of these brands.
