Standing water in the bottom

Start with the filter and sump, where food and broken glass collect. Then the drain hose, the most frequent dishwasher repair culprit after the filter, especially where it connects to a garbage disposer: a knockout plug left in the disposer inlet blocks a new installation completely. After those, a failed drain pump or a stuck check valve.

Dishes are not getting clean

The cause is rarely the detergent alone. In order: clogged spray arm holes, a dirty filter, low water because of a weak inlet valve, a failing circulation pump, and water that is not hot enough. A dishwasher repair is not always needed here: hard water scale also coats everything and makes a good dishwasher look bad.

Not drying

Many modern machines rely on residual heat, so a missing rinse aid is the first thing to rule out. Then a failed heating element, a dead high-limit thermostat or a vent that does not open.

Leaks

Door gasket worn or twisted, a loose or cracked inlet hose, a leaking pump seal, or too much foam from the wrong detergent. Leak at the front bottom of the door often means the gasket or the door spring tension.

Will not start or stops mid-cycle

Door latch or switch first, then the control board, then the thermal fuse. A machine that runs but never fills is usually an inlet valve.

What you can safely check first

1. Turn off the power at the breaker before reaching into the bottom of the tub.
2. Remove the lower rack and the filter. Rinse the filter under the tap, and clear any debris, broken glass and labels from the sump with care.
3. Look at the spray arms and clear the small holes with a toothpick.
4. Run the kitchen sink and the disposer, and check that the drain line is not backing up.
5. Check the door closes and latches with a firm click.
6. Run a hot cycle with a cup of white vinegar on the top rack to cut scale, then see whether the problem improves.

Stop and call us if water is reaching the floor, if anything smells burnt, or if you have to remove panels to reach wiring. Do not bypass the door switch or reach into a machine that is plugged in and wet.

Built-in, drawer and portable models

Most dishwashers are built in under the counter, so dishwasher repair often starts by sliding the unit out. They come out with a few screws, but a tight cabinet makes the job slower. Drawer-style units have two separate tubs, each with its own pump and valve, so you may have one half working. Portable dishwashers on casters connect at the sink faucet and behave differently: leaks at the quick-connect are the main issue.
