Dryer symptoms and what usually causes them
Runs but does not heat
On an electric dryer, the order of likelihood is a blown thermal fuse (often a sign of a blocked vent), a burned-out heating element, a failed thermostat, and a faulty timer or control. If only half the heat is missing, check whether the breaker has tripped only one pole: an electric dryer needs both legs of a 240-volt circuit. On a gas dryer, the usual suspects are the igniter, the gas valve coils and the flame sensor. Gas igniters weaken with age and fail to open the valve.
Heats but takes forever to dry
Nearly always airflow. A packed lint screen, lint in the duct behind the machine, a crushed flexible duct or a blocked roof or wall vent holds moist air in the drum. Dryer repair for this symptom is often a duct cleaning and a thermostat check, not parts.
Drum will not turn
The drive belt has snapped or slipped off, which is the most common cause. Next are a worn idler pulley, a failed drive motor, and a door switch that does not register closed. A thumping while it turns suggests worn drum rollers or glides, a routine dryer repair once the drum is out.
Squealing or banging
A squeal is usually the idler pulley or the rear drum support; a rattle is often a coin or a worn roller.
Will not start
Door switch, thermal fuse, start switch, then motor or board. A dryer repair that reaches the board is rare.
What you can safely check first
- Empty and wash the lint screen. Hold it to the light: if it looks clogged even when clean, a film from fabric softener sheets may be blocking it, so rinse with warm soapy water.
- Check the breaker for an electric dryer, and the shutoff handle on a gas dryer, which should line up with the pipe.
- Unplug the dryer, slide it out and look at the vent hose for kinks or crushing.
- Run the dryer for a few minutes and feel the air at the outside vent. Weak airflow means a blockage in the duct.
- Shorten the vent run if you can, and use rigid or semi-rigid metal duct, not plastic or foil.
Stop and call us if you smell gas: leave the house, avoid switches and flames, and call the gas utility from outside. Also stop for a burning smell or a hot-to-the-touch dryer cabinet. Never bypass a thermal fuse or thermostat, because that is what stops a lint fire.
Gas, electric and stacked dryers
Gas and electric dryers heat differently, so dryer repair parts differ. We do not do gas-line or gas-valve plumbing work; we repair the dryer itself, such as igniters and sensors. Stacked washer-dryers and compact apartment units use a shared console or a condensing design, and they need different checks.

Why is my dryer taking two cycles to dry clothes?+
Restricted airflow is the top reason. Clean the lint screen, then check the hose and outside vent for lint. A failing thermostat or element can also cut heat, but vent blockage is far more common.
Is a clogged dryer vent really a fire risk?+
Yes. Lint is flammable, and a blocked vent traps heat that can trip the thermal fuse or ignite lint. Clean the vent regularly, and do not run the dryer if it feels abnormally hot or smells burnt.
My electric dryer runs but stays cold. What now?+
Check that the breaker is fully on, as a half-tripped breaker gives power to the drum but not the heater. If the breaker is fine, the heating element, thermal fuse or thermostat has probably failed.
What if I smell gas near my dryer?+
Leave the house, do not touch switches or flames, and call your gas utility from outside. Do not try to fix gas connections yourself. Once the gas company clears it, we can look at the dryer.

How often should the duct be cleaned?+
