Common washer problems and their usual causes

Water stays in the drum

Very often this is a drain problem rather than a dead washer, and that kind of washer repair is usually modest. Look first for a clogged drain pump filter or a pump jammed by a sock, coin or underwire. Then a kinked or blocked drain hose, then a worn pump motor, then a lid switch or control board that is telling the machine not to continue.

It will not spin, or spins slowly

An unbalanced load comes first, and the washer simply stops to protect itself. After that, worn drive belt on belt-drive models, a failed lid switch or door lock, a worn motor coupling on top-loaders, and worn motor or control board.

Loud banging or grinding

Heavy items bunched on one side cause banging. A rhythmic roar that grows with spin speed points to worn drum bearings, which is especially common on front-loaders and is not a cheap fix once water has reached the bearing seal. Shock absorbers or suspension rods on top-loaders cause a thump during spin.

Leaks and smells

Leaks usually come from the door boot on a front-loader, a loose hose clamp, or a failing drain pump housing. A musty smell is generally a dirty boot and detergent residue, not a broken part.

No water, or slow filling

Check the supply hoses and the small screens in the inlet valves before blaming the valve itself. Mineral grit clogs those screens often.

What you can safely check first

1. Pause the cycle, unplug the washer and open the door or lid. Make sure the door latches fully and nothing is trapped in it.
2. Redistribute the load if it is lopsided, and take out a very heavy item like a comforter.
3. Check that both water taps behind the machine are open and the hoses are not crushed.
4. With the plug out, find the small drain access door on a front-loader. Put a towel and shallow tray down, and clear the filter slowly because a lot of water can come out.
5. Pull the machine forward gently and look at the drain hose for kinks.
6. Plug back in and run a short drain-and-spin cycle.

Stop and call us if you smell burning, see scorch marks, find water around electrical parts, or hear metal grinding. Do not bypass a door lock or lid switch to make it run. Anything involving wiring or the control board is washer repair for a technician.

Top-load, front-load and stackable washers
