What usually goes wrong, by symptom

The fridge is warm but the freezer is still cold

This is the classic airflow problem. The freezer makes the cold, and a fan pushes some of it into the fresh-food side. Causes, most common first: the evaporator coil has frosted over because the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or defrost control has failed; the evaporator fan motor has stopped; the air damper is stuck shut; a control board has failed. A thick layer of frost on the freezer back wall points to the first cause.

Both sections are warm

Start with dust. Condenser coils caked in pet hair cannot shed heat, so the compressor runs long and cools poorly. After that come a failed condenser fan, a bad compressor start relay (you may hear a click every few minutes as it tries and cuts out), and, less often, a refrigerant leak in the sealed system.

Water on the floor

A frozen or clogged defrost drain is the usual cause: meltwater has nowhere to go and spills out under the crisper drawers. Next most likely are a loose or cracked water line to the ice maker or dispenser, a failing inlet valve, and a cracked drain pan.

Loud, or running all day

A scraping or chirping sound from the freezer is often ice touching the evaporator fan. A hum from the back is usually a dirty or failing condenser fan. A door gasket that no longer seals makes the unit run constantly to keep up.

What you can safely check first

1. Confirm the fridge has power: the light or display is on and the outlet works. Check the breaker.
2. Look at the temperature setting. A bumped dial or a switched display setting is a surprisingly common call.
3. Make sure nothing blocks the air vents inside, and the doors close fully.
4. Try the paper test on the gaskets. Close a sheet of paper in the door; if it slides out easily, the seal is weak at that spot.
5. If you can reach the coils, unplug the fridge first, then vacuum the dust from the condenser area at the back or bottom.
6. Keep the doors shut. An unopened fridge holds its cold for roughly four hours, so move perishables to a cooler if the problem drags on.

Stop and call us if you smell burning, see water near the plug, hear the compressor buzzing hot, or find a solid sheet of ice. Do not chip ice with a knife or screwdriver, because the tubing behind it can be punctured. Anything involving refrigerant is technician work, not a home refrigerator repair.

Which type of refrigerator you own matters

Top-freezer models are the simplest refrigerator repair and usually the cheapest. Side-by-side and French-door units add dispensers, door ice makers and more fans and dampers, so there is more that can fail.
