Repair or replace calculator
Repair or replace calculator: enter four numbers and see which way the decision leans, with the reasons.
This repair or replace calculator compares the repair quote with the price of a new appliance and the age of yours.
How the repair or replace calculator decides
It uses the common 50 percent rule and the typical life of the appliance. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new appliance, replacing usually makes more sense. If the appliance is also past the typical life for its type, the case for replacing gets stronger, and when both numbers are low, repairing usually wins. The typical lifespans are general rules of thumb, not manufacturer data, so treat the answer as a guide and ask for a price when you are unsure.
