GE Dishwasher Error Codes
GE Dishwasher Error Codes: find your code, try the safe step, and book if it does not clear.
The meanings here come from GE Appliances’ support article on dishwasher error, fault or function codes. GE says these codes help repair technicians diagnose a dishwasher quickly, and the same table lists what an owner can try. Codes vary by model, so your manual still applies. We cover the 13 most useful ones.
Before you touch anything
Switch the dishwasher off at the breaker before you reach into the tub, clean a drain part or check under the machine. Never open the control panel. Never pull the dishwasher out while connected. Do not defeat the float switch or any safety part, and do not take apart the water supply fittings.
A number followed by H, such as 1H: delay start
Not a fault. GE says a delay start is active.
Nothing to fix. Cancel or wait it out; GE has a separate delay start guide.
C1: pump-out took over 2 minutes
The drain stage ran longer than 2 minutes.
Clean the air gap, reposition or replace the drain hose and run the disposer to clear it. If C1 continues, contact service. The air gap is the small cap on the sink or counter.
C2: total pump-out over 7 minutes
The whole pump-out cycle exceeded 7 minutes.
GE says to press Reset to silence the beep. If C1 or C3 show up too, work on the drain.
C3: will not drain
The dishwasher is not draining.
Turn off power at the breaker for about 30 seconds, restore power and reset. If it continues, contact service.
C4: filled twice after a power failure
GE lists a stuck or failed float switch, or a clogged drain or sump.
Touch Start, then Cancel/Reset. Free the float cover, the upside-down cup-shaped plastic piece at the front left corner. Look at the sump at the back bottom of the tub for debris. Switch off at the breaker before reaching in. If C4 stays, service.
C5: pump-out too short
The pump-out ran for too short a time.
Confirm the water supply is on and run the cycle again. Free the float cover if it is stuck.
C6: incoming water too cold
The water coming in is below the 120 degrees F GE wants.
Run the nearby faucet before starting so cold water clears the line, and avoid running the washing machine or showers at the same time. GE also says to raise the water heater temperature and use longer cycle options that add heat. Follow the water heater’s label when adjusting it.
C7: water temperature sensor
The temperature sensor circuit has failed.
Turn off power at the breaker for about 30 seconds, then reset. If C7 returns, contact service.
C8: detergent cup cannot open
Something is stopping the cup from opening fully.
Remove the obstruction, often silverware or a pan. Close and latch the door, then wait 30 seconds for the cup to open.
PF: power failure
Power was cut during the cycle.
Select your cycle and options again and press Start. The dishwasher then runs normally.
Cup Open: detergent cup not closed
The cup is open.
Add detergent and latch the cup shut. To override without opening the door, press Start again. If it continues, contact service.
FTD or F56: failure to drain
The dishwasher failed to drain.
Check the drain hose, the air gap and the disposer, and look at GE’s Not Draining guide. Stop at standing water that will not clear.
H2O: low water
A low water condition.
If it appears only on the 1-Hour Wash, schedule service and use other cycles until then. On AutoSense, Heavy, Normal or Light, check the inlet hose is not kinked. If that is not it, call for service.
When to call a technician
If a code comes back after the steps above, or the manufacturer’s page says it needs service, our technician can come to your home. Start with our dishwasher repair page, or book a visit (you can also call us). The service call is $80, and the repair price is quoted after the technician has looked at the machine.
We service GE and other major brands; see GE appliance repair. Top Town is an independent repair company, not affiliated with or authorized by GE.
