Whirlpool Washer Error Codes
Whirlpool Washer Error Codes: find your code, try the safe step, and book if it does not clear.
The meanings below come from two Whirlpool Product Help pages: error codes in top-load HE washers and error codes in front-load washers. Whirlpool says the lists may not cover every code for your model, so codes vary and your owner’s manual has the final say. Front-load-only codes are marked.
Before you touch anything
Unplug the washer, or switch off its breaker, before you move it, clean a filter or check a hose. Turn off both water faucets before you unscrew a hose. Never open the control panel or touch the control board. Mop up any water on the floor before you plug back in.
drn: not draining properly
Whirlpool’s top-load HE page says the washer is not draining properly and that the cause may be how it was installed.
Check the installation: drain hose kinks, how far the hose goes into the standpipe and whether anything blocks it. If the hose is fine and the washer still will not empty, book a visit.
HC: hoses reversed
The hot and cold inlet hoses were installed the wrong way round. It shows at the end of a wash cycle.
Shut off both water supplies, swap the hoses, turn the water back on and run another cycle to confirm. No repair needed.
LdL: lid is not locking
The lid lock is not engaging.
Look for items under the lid and for detergent buildup around the lid lock. If it still will not lock, the lock is likely the fault.
LdU: lid cannot unlock
The washer senses something on the lid.
Take off anything resting on top, such as a laundry basket, and try again.
LF, Lo FL or F8 E1: slow to fill
The washer is taking too long to fill.
Whirlpool’s first check is that both the hot and cold faucets are fully open, because both supplies are needed. On front loaders it adds: check for kinked inlet hoses and for anti-flood devices in the water line.
Ofb: unbalanced load
The load is lopsided. The washer runs a correction routine on its own.
Let it carry on. If it stops with the dial flashing, spread the load evenly, close the lid and press Start/Pause. Do not wash one heavy item alone.
OL: load too large
The washer drains its water and detergent because the load is too big.
Take several items out, add HE detergent, close the lid and press Start/Pause.
Sud or Sd: too many suds
On front loaders the washer extends the rinse and pauses to add water.
Use HE detergent only. Whirlpool also says to swap “no splash” liquid chlorine bleach for regular liquid bleach on front loaders, and to check the drain hose is not kinked or clogged.
F5 E2: door not locking (front load)
The door is not locking properly.
Remove anything blocking the door and make sure it closes fully. Press Pause or Cancel twice, then Power once, to clear the code. If it comes straight back, the latch needs a technician.
F7 E1: motor speed (front load)
The motor cannot reach the speed the cycle asks for.
Make sure all shipping bolts are out and the washer is not overloaded, then clear the code the same way. Shipping bolts are a common miss on new installs.
F9 E1: slow drain (front load)
Draining took longer than expected, typically over 8 minutes.
The drain hose must not be kinked or clogged and should have the U-shaped loop. Whirlpool says the standpipe should be between 39 and 96 inches high. Excess suds also slow the drain, so use HE detergent.
Int: cycle paused or cancelled (front load)
Not a fault. The washer may keep spinning and draining for 20 to 30 minutes while it shows Int.
Press Pause or Cancel twice, then Power once. If it stays on, cut power for 5 minutes.
PF: power failure
A power cut interrupted the cycle.
Touch and hold Start to resume, or press Power to clear the display.
When to call a technician
If a code comes back after the steps above, or the manufacturer’s page says it needs service, our technician can come to your home. Start with our washer repair page, or book a visit (you can also call us). The service call is $80, and the repair price is quoted after the technician has looked at the machine.
We service Whirlpool and other major brands; see Whirlpool appliance repair. Top Town is an independent repair company, not affiliated with or authorized by Whirlpool.

Questions about whirlpool washer error codes
Why are there two lists of Whirlpool washer codes?+
Whirlpool publishes separate pages for top-load HE and front-load washers, and says not every code appears on every model. Match the page to your washer type and check your owner's manual.
What does a code like F8 E1 or F9 E1 mean?+
The first number and the E number together name a fault. On Whirlpool's lists F8 E1 is slow water fill and F9 E1 is a drain that takes too long.
What if my washer shows an F code that is not listed?+
For other F-and-E codes on front loaders, Whirlpool says to unplug the washer or cut power for 5 minutes, reconnect it, reselect the cycle and press Start. If the code returns, schedule service.
