Refrigerator Maintenance: 8 Tasks to Do Every Year

Refrigerator Maintenance: what to look at first.

Good refrigerator maintenance is mostly five minutes here and there: vacuum the dust, check the seal, flush the drain, change the filter. Regular refrigerator maintenance is the cheapest way to avoid a warm fridge in July, and it takes less time than a trip to the grocery store. This article gives you eight tasks, a schedule that fits the seasons, and the signs that maintenance is no longer enough.

The reasoning is simple. A refrigerator moves heat from inside the cabinet to the room. Anything that slows that process, such as dust on the coils, a leaking gasket or a blocked drain, forces the compressor to work longer, and parts that run longer wear out sooner. Refrigerator maintenance removes those obstacles.

Eight tasks for yearly refrigerator maintenance

Do these refrigerator maintenance tasks in order the first time, then spread them across the year using the schedule further down.

  1. Vacuum the condenser coils. Unplug the refrigerator, remove the bottom grille or rear panel, and brush and vacuum the coils and fan area. In Sacramento summers, with heat pushing the compressor harder, dust here costs you the most.
  2. Test the door gaskets. Close a sheet of paper in the door at several points. If it slides out without a tug, clean the gasket with warm soapy water and test again. A seal that still fails needs replacement.
  3. Flush the defrost drain. Find the small drain hole at the back of the freezer or the fridge floor and flush it with warm water. This prevents ice buildup and leaks.
  4. Clean the drain pan. If the pan under the unit is accessible, slide it out, empty it and wash it. A smelly pan is a warning that the drain is slow.
  5. Replace the water filter. Follow the interval in your manual, usually about every six months. A clogged filter slows the dispenser and ice maker and can cause leaks.
  6. Check the temperature settings. Use a thermometer in a glass of water. Adjust to about 37F in the fridge and 0F in the freezer and recheck the next day.
  7. Clean the inside. Remove shelves, wash with warm water and a little dish soap, and throw out anything expired. Wipe up spills at once; sticky residue on the gasket is a common cause of seal trouble.
  8. Level the cabinet and check the airflow. The front should sit slightly higher than the back so the door closes by itself. Leave a few inches behind the unit and make sure nothing blocks the vents.

Why refrigerator maintenance matters more in a hot kitchen

A refrigerator in a 95F kitchen works harder than one in a cool room, and many Sacramento-area homes put theirs in a garage or on a sunny wall. Heat makes coil cleanliness and gasket tightness matter even more. If you keep a second fridge in the garage, give it extra attention each summer, because it lives in the worst conditions.

A seasonal refrigerator maintenance schedule you can save

Copy the list below into your phone calendar, or print this page and stick it inside a cabinet door.

  • Spring (March or April): vacuum coils, test gaskets, flush the drain, replace the filter if it is due.
  • Early summer (June): check temperatures with a thermometer, clear space behind the unit, confirm the door seals closed after the heat arrived.
  • Fall (September or October): second coil cleaning, deep clean inside, drain pan, check the water line for kinks.
  • Winter (December or January): filter replacement if it is due, check the settings after holiday loads, and look for frost.

Pet owners should treat the coil cleaning as quarterly. A single long-haired dog or cat can fill the coils with fur in a few months.

What refrigerator maintenance does and does not do

Maintenance lowers the work the compressor has to do, which is why a well-kept refrigerator runs more efficiently. It cuts the chance of leaks and warm spots. It does not repair a failing fan, a cracked defrost heater or a worn compressor, and it will not make a very old unit new. Think of it as the thing that stops small problems from piling up.

A fridge that gets regular refrigerator maintenance still tells you when something is wrong, usually through temperature, noise or ice. Learn the usual hum of your unit so a change stands out.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most damage during home refrigerator maintenance comes from enthusiasm. People spray cleaner on the coils or the control panel, chip frost with a knife, or pull the unit out so hard that they crimp the ice maker line. Use a vacuum and a long brush on the coils, a plastic scraper if you need one, and move the unit slowly with the water line in view. Do not run the refrigerator empty at its coldest setting to test it; load it normally and judge it by the thermometer.

Another mistake is to skip the small jobs because the fridge seems fine. A seal that is only slightly leaky will not spoil food today, but it raises humidity inside, builds frost and makes the compressor run longer every day. Refrigerator maintenance works because it catches that kind of slow loss.

Safety rules while you work

  • Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off the breaker, before you vacuum coils or touch anything behind a panel.
  • Do not use a sharp tool on ice or the evaporator. A punctured refrigerant line cannot be fixed at home.
  • Shut off the water supply before you replace a filter on a line-fed model if the fitting leaks.
  • Leave the sealed refrigerant system, the compressor and the control board to a technician.

Stop and call

If your refrigerator maintenance does not bring the unit back to normal, stop. These signs call for a technician: the fridge will not hold 40F or below after cleaning the coils, the compressor clicks on and off without running, the freezer wall keeps icing up, or you smell burning. Bring the model number and a note of when the symptoms began.

The cost of any repair, even after careful refrigerator maintenance, depends on the part, the brand and how hard it is to reach, and we quote it after the technician has seen the refrigerator. Our refrigerator repair page lists the brands we work on and how a visit works. If you are not sure whether the problem is worth fixing, try the repair or replace calculator. Common questions

How often should I clean refrigerator coils?

Twice a year is enough for most homes. Clean them every three months if you have shedding pets, a dusty kitchen or the refrigerator sits in a warm spot like a garage. Always unplug the unit first, and use a brush and vacuum.

What temperature should my refrigerator be set to?

Aim for about 37F in the fridge and 0F in the freezer. Anything above 40F in the fridge lets bacteria grow faster. Check with an appliance thermometer in a glass of water, since the dial numbers are not degrees.

Does refrigerator maintenance really save money?

It can. Clean coils, a tight door seal and clear airflow let the compressor run less, which lowers the energy it uses and reduces wear on its parts. It will not make a failing part last, but it prevents many avoidable breakdowns.
