Dishwasher Not Working? 6 Signs You Need Repair

Dishwasher not working: dishes in a dishwasher rack
Dishwasher Not Working: what to look at first.

When your dishwasher not working shows up as a dead panel, a full tub of dirty water or dishes that come out gritty, the question is the same: fix it yourself, or call? This guide sorts the common failures into four groups (not starting, not draining, not cleaning, noisy) and gives you clear thresholds for each.

Start with the cheap tests on any dishwasher not working. A surprising number of “broken” dishwashers turn out to have a tripped breaker, a door that did not latch, or a clogged filter.

Dishwasher not working: no power or no start

If the panel is dark or nothing happens when you press Start, check these in order:

  • Close the door firmly and press it until you hear the latch click.
  • Check the breaker. If it is tripped, reset it once. A second trip means stop and call.
  • Look for a child lock or a delay-start setting on the panel.
  • Check the wall switch if your dishwasher is wired to one, often next to the sink.

If the lights come on but the cycle never starts, the door latch switch or the control board is the usual suspect. A latch that fails to signal “closed” keeps the machine from starting. You can sometimes hear a faint click when the latch is good. No click is a clue, though not proof.

Standing water: when the dishwasher is not working at draining

Water left in the tub after a cycle is almost always a drain problem, and it is the most common version of a dishwasher not working. Take the bottom rack out and scoop water out with a cup. Remove and rinse the filter, then look at the sump for broken glass, olive pits or a label from a jar. Run the garbage disposal if the dishwasher drains through it, because a clogged disposal or an unopened knockout plug on a new disposal is a common cause.

If the filter and the sump are clear and the water still stays, the drain hose may be kinked or clogged, the drain pump may be jammed, or the pump motor may have failed. If you hear a humming without any water moving, the pump is trying but blocked. If you hear nothing at all, the pump may be dead or not getting power.

6 signs a dishwasher not working needs repair

With a dishwasher not working, these are the signs that move the job from home maintenance to a visit. We have put them in a numbered list so you can check them off.

  1. The breaker trips every time you run it. That points to a shorted pump, heater or control. Do not keep resetting it.
  2. The panel is lit, the door latches and nothing starts. The latch switch, the control board or the timer is likely at fault.
  3. Water remains after you cleaned the filter and sump. The pump, the hose or the check valve is the next suspect.
  4. Dishes are dirty after a clean filter and good detergent. Spray arm motors, a weak circulation pump or a failed inlet valve limit the cleaning.
  5. A loud grinding, screaming or knocking noise. A foreign object can cause it, but so can a worn wash motor or pump bearing. Noise that continues after you have removed items from the sump is a repair sign.
  6. Visible leaks, rust or a burnt smell. These are not signs to experiment with. Turn the breaker off.

Quick cleaning checks when a dishwasher not working leaves dirty dishes

Before you blame the motor, run this routine. Check that the spray arms spin freely and that their holes are open. Rinse the filter. Pour a little hot water in the tub: if the hot tap is cold, wait for it to heat. Use fresh dishwasher detergent, since old powder cakes and loses strength. Load so water can reach everything, with nothing blocking the spray arms or the detergent door.

If hard water leaves a white film on the glass, that is mineral scale, not dirt. Look at our dishwasher maintenance article for descaling and care. If the water is leaking, the page on a dishwasher leaking is the next place to go, and wet dishes at the end have a page of their own.

Noises when a dishwasher is not working, and noises that are normal

A swish, a gentle hum, a click from the detergent door and a gurgle at drain time are normal. A rattling that sounds like loose dishes is usually loose dishes. Chatter against the door is a spray arm hitting a tall item.

Metal on metal, a high squeal that grows louder, or a loud buzz with no water movement is different. Those usually mean a failing pump or motor bearing, or a stuck impeller. A dishwasher not working with noise on top is a case to switch off and book, because running it further can damage the pump.

When a professional repair is worth it

Use these rules of thumb for a dishwasher not working. A repair is generally worth considering when the dishwasher is in decent shape, the failure is one part (a latch, a pump, a valve, a spray arm motor) and the rest of the machine still looks good. It is harder to justify when the tub is rusting or cracked, the racks are shot, there are several failures at once, or the machine is already well past a normal lifespan.

Cost depends on the part, the labor, and how hard the machine is to reach. We do not quote repair prices in an article, and we give the price after the technician has looked at the dishwasher. If you are close to the line, the repair or replace calculator gives you a quick read.

Stop and call us about a dishwasher not working if you notice this

Switch off the breaker and call if you see water near the wiring, sparks, smoke or a melted smell. Do the same if the breaker trips repeatedly, if the control panel is wet, or if the door will not close because of a bent hinge or spring. Do not open the control panel and do not reach into the pump area while the power is on.

A dishwasher not working at the start is not a reason to bypass a door switch. Those switches stop the machine from running with the door open. Defeating them means water, power and an open door.

Common questions

Why is my dishwasher full of water?

Usually a clogged filter, a blocked sump or a clogged garbage disposal connection. Clear those first. If water still stays, the drain hose may be kinked or the pump may be jammed or failed.

Why does my dishwasher hum but not run?

A hum without water movement suggests the pump or motor is receiving power but cannot turn, often from a jam or a worn bearing. Switch it off and remove debris from the sump. If it persists, book a repair.

How old is too old to repair a dishwasher?

There is no single age. Judge the condition: a sound tub and racks with one failed part are worth repairing, while rust, cracks or several failures at once point toward replacement. A repair-or-replace calculator can help.
